I needed another person in the room while my baby was whisked away by the NICU team. I so desperately wanted to send my husband to be with our baby and watch over her while they worked. At the same time I was longing for his support as I shook in fear in the hospital bed. He couldn't be two places at once, and I selfishly asked him to stay. Oh how I wish I had a plan for this, but it really never crossed my mind.
Because of this, I have done away with the standard 38 week on call period. I have decided to go on call for my clients when they sign my contract. I couldn't imagine missing a preterm birth, because I wasn't prepared to attend at 36 weeks. It makes a life a little more hectic as I plan, and forces me to have a very reliable back up if I ever want to leave town, but it certainly eases the mind of a client who doesn't know when her baby will arrive.
